Abstract

Range extension of Phyllostomus latifolius (Thomas, 1901) for southern Amazon rainforest, Mato Grosso, Brazil (Chiroptera: Phyllostomidae). The genus Phyllostomus Lacépède, 1799 consists of four currently recognized species: P. discolor Wagner, 1843, P. elongatus (É. Geoffroy, 1810), P. hastatus (Pallas, 1767) and P. latifolius (Thomas, 1901). In this paper is reported a new southernmost limit in the distribution of P. latifolius, the rarest species of the genus. This new record is based on a sample collected at right bank of Teles-Pires River, at southern Amazonia (10°49'04"S and 55°27'03" W). The specimen shows all the diagnostic characters of the species, as well as their morphometric traits were consistent with previously reported data in the literature. This is also the first record of the species for the Mato Grosso state and the Centro-Oeste region of Brazil.
Keywords: Amazonian basin, Guianan Spear-nosed Bat, Mato Grosso state, southernmost record.
